Marine Data Business Analyst -

Ocean Infinity is seeking a Business Analyst to support through business intelligence and client interaction, solutions to present data products and insights to internal/external stakeholders.

The role:

This is a new role in the organization, due to expansion and will be part of the wider Enterprise IT Operations team, reporting into the Director, Enterprise Marine Data Solutions. The main function of the Enterprise IT Business Analyst is to assess, evaluate, implement, integrate and support business systems for the Enterprise and to develop business opportunities to be serviced.


The responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:

  • To support, develop and implement innovative data solutions that enhance OIGLs business of data services and product offerings to its clients;
  • Review, analyse and evaluate business systems and user/client needs:
  • Document requirements, define scope and objectives and formulate systems to parallel overall business strategies:
  • Determine operational objectives by studying business functions; gathering information; evaluating output requirements and formats;
  • Construct workflow charts and diagrams; studying system capabilities; writing specifications;
  • Improve systems by studying current practices; designing modifications and recommend controls by identifying problems; writing improved procedures;
  • Define business requirements by identifying milestones, phases and elements;
  • Monitor progress by tracking activity; resolving problems; publishing progress reports; recommending actions;
  • Maintain user confidence and protect operations by keeping information confidential;
  • Prepare technical reports by collecting, analyzing and summarizing information and trends;
  • Validate resource requirements and develop cost estimate models;
  • Conduct and coordinate financial, product, market, operational and related research to support strategic and business planning within the various departments and programs of the client group;
  • Interpret, evaluate and interrelate research data and develop integrated business analyses and projections for incorporation into strategic decision-making;
  • Plan and coordinate the development of primary and secondary market research studies in support of strategic planning and specific marketing initiatives, as required and presents findings of studies to client committees;
  • Perform daily, weekly and monthly reviews and analyses of current processes using operational metrics and reports;
  • Understand and communicate the financial and operational impact of any changes;
  • Suggest changes to senior management using analytics to support your recommendations;
  • Actively participate in the implementation of approved changes;
  • Create informative, actionable and repeatable reporting that highlights relevant business trends and opportunities for improvement;
  • Conduct insightful, ad hoc analyses to investigate ongoing or one-time operational issues;
  • Identifying and recommending new ways to save money by streamlining business data models in close collaboration with Marine Data Product Analyst team and across organization;
  • Communicating with internal stakeholders to understand data content and business requirements as well as being a lead.

  • B.Sc. in Science/Tech/Data discipline;
  • 10 years experience minimum in the field or in a related area;
  • Familiar with marine data concepts and client data concepts;
  • Rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals to drive commercial business forward;
  • Extensive and thorough understanding of marine data concepts and principals, encompassing both geophysical and IMR marine data products. Including at least 7 years in offshore data acquisition and processing in senior and supervisor roles;
  • Data-driven and possess strong analytical skills so as to draw sharp insights and actionable from data;
  • Profound understanding of the marine data flow, from sensor to product, including pre-project planning, execution and reporting;
  • Ability to impact operations and effect change without being confrontational;
  • Established track record in identifying, developing and delivering technology driven improvements in internal procedures;
  • Established track record in identifying opportunities to develop products and services that anticipate and meet emerging client requirements;
  • Ability to view entire Marine Data environment in a holistic sense, recognizing synergies between unconnected elements to improve the overall process/business;
  • Extensive experience interacting with clients on Marine data issues.



  •  Knowledge and background within any of OIGL lines of business, but specifically within marine survey sector.



  • Complies with Ocean Infinity management system policies, all OIMS practices, programs, and procedures;
  • Successfully completes required training as identified by OIMS and the management team;
  • Participates in the OIMS by reporting events, attending meetings and workshops, reporting problems, and recommending improvements, and other related activities;
  • Informs an Ocean Infinity Supervisor, Team Lead, or Manager of any unidentified risks, hazards, or system deficiencies in the workplace;
  • Supports Ocean Infinity’s environmental and social goals.
