Functional Safety Engineer -

Ocean Infinity is seeking a Functional Safety Engineer.

*a partially remote work arrangement may be considered for a qualified person with regular attendance expected in Southampton for meetings, workshops, trials etc.  

 

The role

They will be involved in the definition, implementation, integration, and operations of all functional safety systems we deliver as a business. They will be involved in the safety lifecycle across complex projects; from eliciting safety requirements, performing safety and failure analyses, through to test & verification planning.

They will also be responsible for providing technical authority and review of safety related work products from other disciplines and contributes to the planning and implementation of projects, bids, and proposals, accountable to the Engineering Managers.

This position requires a minimum of 5 years’ professional experience, ideally in a high integrity field of engineering such as aerospace, automotive, marine, defence or oil and gas. Experience or familiarity with robotics, radio communication systems, power systems and control systems would be beneficial; to be comfortable with wide variety of technical specifications, electrical interfaces, communication protocols and willingness to learn as needed.

The responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:

  • Lead on the development and verification of automatic protection systems under IEC 61508;
  • Support the development of safety requirements across the system-of-systems;
  • Create and/or supervise the creation and review of safety work products to meet the requirements of ISO 26262 or other similar standards, class societies and maritime flag states;
  • Work with disciplines such as systems, hardware, embedded software to define and document their architectures to support safety arguments;
  • Conduct inductive and deductive safety and failure analyses including HAZID, FTA, FMEA and FMECA wherever required and at all architectural levels;
  • Support product assurance projects such a class society rules compliance;
  • Support diagnostic coverage evaluation;
  • Support to verification and testing activities for all systems, software and hardware work products;
  • Co-develop the safety engineering processes within the wider systems engineering framework.

Person Specification:

Essential:

  • First class degree or upper 2nd Engineering degree or other highly quantitative field (or equivalent experience);
  • Experience of working in a formal safety management environment, e.g. ISO 26262;
  • Experience of hardware and software development for safety related systems;
  • Experience of systems design for embedded software systems;
  • Familiarity with Model Based Systems Engineering, SysML/UML;
  • Strong knowledge of safety and failure analyses methodologies such as FMEA, FTA, FMECA etc;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and excellent technical knowledge. Able to quickly build rapport with peers and stakeholders. Able to tactfully challenge without alienating;
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills and attention to detail;
  • Strong understanding of quality management such as standards, regulations and applicable policies and procedures such as information, change and configuration management; and
  • Strong linkage to Ocean Infinity’s values.

 

Compliance:

  • Complies with Ocean Infinity management system policies, all OIMS practices, programs, and procedures;
  • Successfully completes required training as identified by OIMS and the management team;
  • Participates in the OIMS by reporting events, attending meetings and workshops, reporting problems, and recommending improvements, and other related activities;
  • Informs an Ocean Infinity Supervisor, Team Lead, or Manager of any unidentified risks, hazards, or system deficiencies in the workplace;
  • Supports Ocean Infinity’s environmental and social goals.
